Busy, Busy, Busy
Well, things are going at breakneck speed at the moment, so we’ve got a few announcements to make this week:
- Next Friday sees the opening of the PHD exhibition at the Edge. This promises to be one of the most unusual shows we’ve had so far at the space – the proposal for the show came on a single sheet of A4 paper, which consisted of a number of pencil markings which resembled writing, some of which wasn’t even written horizontally. Of course we had to have the show and are looking forward to seeing the evidence of the Darknosis project – check out their website for more information. PHD opens at the Edge on Friday 18th of September.
- Our Residuum project is coming to a head at the Back to Backs in Birmingham. Dreams of Tall Buildings have created a series of sonic interventions in the Back to Backs, including ‘sound showers’, to cleanse the audience member of the noise of the city, and installations in specific rooms, referencing the history of these very special buildings. Going ’round the houses’ is a fascinating experience, very unlike the usual kind of National Trust property, you are encouraged to touch things, sit on the seats and interact with the environment, it really resonated with me as it brought back the stories my family had told me of growing up in just such an environment in Lozells in the 40s and 50s. The exhibition runs from 22nd – 26th September at the Back to Backs on Hurst St. If you would like to join us for the launch event on the 24th, get in touch and we will book you one of the limited places – you get a free tour of the Back to Backs, too!
- Friction are off to South Africa! Sandra and Lee will be going to Johannesburg for two months from the end of September as artists on Visiting Arts‘ ‘Square Mile‘ project. We’ll be working in the Joubert Park area, with local artists and Johannesburg Art Gallery to create a series of interventions examining the areas cultural, environmental and bio diversity. We’ll be posting regularly while we’re away and you can also keep up with our progress on the Square Mile site. The office will continue to be open whilst we are there and we will be contactable, and we’ll be back in time for Christmas! We’re compiling a list of questions from people here in the UK to take to Johannesburg, so if you have any questions you’d like to ask a South African, send us your question and who you would like us to ask (be generic, e.g. a postman, we may not get to meet Nelson Mandela) and we’ll ask it for you and post the answers here. email your questions to lee@frictionarts.com.
