Mark Fisher was a writer, philosopher, cultural theorist, critic and writer (amongst other things), who was, and remains, highly influential to post-capitalist discourse. As well as his best known book, Capitalist Realism, he produced many books, essays and blogs that posed, and occasionally answered, important questions regarding the political and social structures which surround and enclose us.

We’re dedicating a whole weekend to exploring and celebrating the life and work of this important and fascinating thinker from 15th – 17th May.

On the 15th, we’ve teamed up with Flatpack Festival and Voce Books to screen ‘We’re Making a Film About Mark Fisher’ by artists Simon Poulter and Sophie Mellor. This will be accompanied by chat from Sadie Plant, philosopher and writer who worked with Fisher and helped set up the Cybernetic Culture Research Unit at Warwick Uni. Along with Tariq Goddard, writer and publisher who, with Fisher, set up Zer0 books and, later, Repeater books, which published the work of Fisher and other theorists and thinkers. (check out Voce Books for physical copies). Simon Poulter will also be on hand to outline the film and the process of making it – it was largely crowd-sourced on Instagram.  Unfortunately, this event is already sold out, but not to worry, we’ve got two more days of Fisher-related activity for you.

On Saturday 16th at 7.30pm (doors 7pm) we’ll be screening the film again, for all those who weren’t quick enough on the Flatpack draw. This special screening will also feature a performance following the screening by Michael Valentine West. Michael is a highly influential experimental musician who has performed under many different guises and scored a number of experimental films, including this one. This event will be ticketed, but PAYF, Eventbrite link HERE

On Sunday afternoon, from 1pm we’ll be hosting a number of participatory, get stuck in happenings from several different artists which are Fisher-inspired.  Including making a ‘Shit Soup’ from deconstructed copies of the Daily Mail (hopefully stolen, rather than paid for), as well as other activities and discussions around themes based on Fisher’s writings. There’s also an opportunity to see Simon Walker’s ‘White Lines’ timeline of the concept of whiteness in society, which is a great jumping off point for discussions around race politics. This event will be ‘pay by bringing a snack, food or drink to share’.

Simon Walker’s White Lines exhibition will be open to view throughout the weekend.
