Culture Club, Week 7: Photography

What a coincidence that we had picture perfect weather this week as our young people take a look at photography!

Photography is what some of us would call the greatest human invention: the ability to capture moments and memories with the simple click of a button. It means that people from all across the world are constantly trying to do it better and what better way to check out their techniques than to look at some festivals and parades held right here in Birmingham and the West Midlands. We looked at newer festivals like the Motofest in Coventry that have been around since 2018 and more traditional festivals like the Birmingham Jazz and Blues festival that have been around since the 1980s.

We then took a look at some photos from projects taken by amazing photographers like Vanley Burke who has been described as “ the godfather of black British photography”. After discussing some of the themes of the projects like home, family and time, the kids had their chance to stretch their creative muscles by choosing 1 photo to draw and also drawing their favourite thing in the world.

All in all, a good week here at Culture Club looking over at how things change over time and how some stay the same while the lens is always there… just watching (since 1888).
